Bringing your existing phone number to Noto

Last updated: June 30, 2026

If your school already has a business phone number — from Google Voice, JustCall, Verizon, or another carrier — you can usually port it into Noto's built-in phone system instead of using a new number. This article explains how porting works, how long it takes, and when picking a brand-new Noto number might be the better call.

Porting vs. getting a new number

When you set up texting and calling in Noto, you have two options:

  • Port your existing number. Keep the number your families already know. This takes about two weeks.

  • Get a new number. Noto provisions a new number in the area code you choose. This is significantly faster than porting and is a good option if you're trying to launch quickly.

Some customers start with a porting request and then switch to a new number to accelerate onboarding — that's a normal trade-off to weigh against keeping your existing number.

How to start a port

Porting is not a self-serve flow inside the app. The Noto team coordinates it with you directly.

  1. Register for voice and text in Noto by navigating to Settings -> General -> Communications -> Text & Voice and select the use existing number option. Your Noto Success Partner will then be in touch to get the transfer started.

  2. Your Noto success partner sends you port-in instructions, a form, and registration details.

  3. Noto handles the transfer with Twilio (the underlying carrier that powers Noto's phone system) on the back end.

If you're aligning the port with a larger launch — like a CRM go-live or the start of a new term — start the conversation early so the two-week window lines up with your target date.

What to expect on cutover day

At the final handoff from your old carrier to Noto, there can be a brief service interruption:

  • Calls may not go through for a short window during the switch.

  • Texts may not go through for a short window during the switch.

You may be unable to receive messages for up to 3 business days after the port completes.

Once the cutover completes, calls and texts flow through Noto on your existing number.

One number per organization

Noto currently supports one phone number per organization. If you have several lines today — for example, a main company line plus individual staff lines — you'll need to consolidate to a single number when you move to Noto. Multi-number support is on the roadmap but not yet available.

Common questions

How long does porting take? Plan on about two weeks from the time you submit the port-in form.

Will I lose service during the port? Only briefly, at the final handoff. Calls and texts may not go through for a short window during the switch.

Can I port a number from Google Voice or another provider? Customers have successfully ported numbers from carriers like JustCall and Verizon. If you're coming from a different provider, raise it with your Noto contact so they can confirm whether the number is eligible before you start.

I need to launch soon — what should I do? Ask Noto to provision a new number in your preferred area code. It's much faster than porting, and you can publicize the new number to families at launch.
