Make-Up Credits

Last updated: July 29, 2026

A make-up credit lets a student attend a replacement session after a cancellation without being charged again. This article covers how credits are issued, how staff apply one to a new session, and how credits get used automatically when a student self-schedules.

Issuing a make-up credit

Make-up credits are either added manually or automatically according to the cancellation window. Note: if you would like make-up credits to be automatically issued when inside the cancellation window, contact your Noto Success Partner to enable this feature.

The typical path to issue a make-up credit manually is:

  1. Mark the original session as Cancelled first. Then, click the option to "Issue makeup credit".

  2. This triggers the usual billing for that session and adds a makeup credit to the student's profile.

Applying a credit to a new session (staff)

When you schedule the make-up session on behalf of the student through the Add to Enrollment flow, a credit selector appears during event creation. To use the credit:

  1. Start creating the new session from the student's enrollment.

  2. In the credit selector, pick the make-up credit you want to use. Only credits tied to that enrollment will appear.

  3. Finish creating the event.

Selecting the credit at this step links it to the event, which is what allows the credit to be consumed when attendance is later marked.

Why a credit sometimes doesn't get consumed

For a credit to actually be applied when attendance is marked, three things must line up:

  • The event must have been linked to the credit at the time it was created (that is, the credit was selected in the event creation step above).

  • The credit must belong to the same enrollment as the session.

  • The credit must belong to the same family as the student.

If any of these do not match, the credit is skipped — even if it was selected during event creation. The most common cause is scheduling the make-up outside the Add to Enrollment flow, so no link between the event and the credit is created.

When a student self-schedules a make-up

If the student books their own make-up session from the member portal, an eligible credit is applied automatically and the session drops to $0. Staff do not need to attach the credit manually in that case.

Expiration

Make-up credits do not expire on their own. They expire only if you set an expiration date manually or enable the enforce-expiration setting on the credit.

Invoicing behavior

Sessions consumed by a make-up credit don't show up on invoices by default. If you want the makeup session visible on the invoice at $0, you have two options:

  • Issue the credit, mark the session do not invoice, and take attendance — it will appear at $0 on the invoice.

  • Add a manual $0 line item directly to the draft invoice.

Common questions

The "Use Make-Up Credit" dropdown isn't showing up for a student who has a valid credit — what should I do? This has been reported in a small number of cases where a non-expired credit exists but the dropdown doesn't appear. Contact Noto support with the student's name and a screenshot of their credits so the team can investigate.

Can students book their own makeup sessions? Make-up credits can be selected and used works when a student self-schedules an eligible session, but if it isn't working for a given student, issue and apply the credit from the admin side.

Can I apply a make-up credit to next month's invoice? There is no documented step-by-step for applying a make-up credit against a subsequent invoice. If this is what you need, contact Noto support so we can walk through it with you directly.

The credit didn't come off the session — what happened? Check that the session was created through the calendar with the credit selected at that time, and that the credit is on the same enrollment and family as the student attending. A credit that was not selected during event creation will not be consumed at attendance.
