How proration works for subscription and recurring flat plans

When a member enrolls partway through a billing cycle, you may not want to charge them the full cycle price. Noto's proration feature handles this for monthly subscription plans by charging only for the sessions remaining in the first month. This article explains how proration is calculated, where it applies, and how it interacts with related billing settings.

Proration on monthly subscription and recurring flat plans

Monthly subscription and recurring plans have an optional proration toggle, configured at the plan level on the Plans page.

• Off (default): The full cycle price is charged regardless of when the member enrolls mid-cycle.

• On: A prorated amount is charged for the first month only. Every subsequent cycle charges the full plan price.

How the prorated amount is calculated

The first-month charge is:

Sessions remaining in the cycle × per-session price, capped at the full plan price. the Value per session can be adjusted and is used for determining proration, the value of cancellation credits, and for powering revenue reports.

Setting the enrollment start date

Staff enrollment forms let you set an enrollment start date on monthly plans, which is what enables mid-cycle enrollment. This start date determines how many sessions remain in the cycle and therefore what the prorated charge will be.

What staff and members see

When a prorated first cycle applies, both the staff-facing and member-facing payment displays show the actual prorated amount rather than the full plan price, so there are no surprises at checkout.

Billing cycle anchor and proration

Monthly subscription plans can be configured to bill on any day from 1 through 28. The cycle anchors on that day — for example, a day-15 anchor means the cycle runs from March 15 to April 14.

The anchor matters for proration because it defines when the cycle starts, which in turn determines which sessions count as "remaining" when a member enrolls mid-cycle.

Common questions

Does proration apply to future cycles? No. Only the first month is prorated. Every cycle after that charges the full plan price.

Can the prorated charge exceed the full plan price? No. The calculation is capped at the full plan price, so a member who enrolls very early in a cycle with a high per-session rate will never be charged more than a normal cycle.
